== Cyclic groups ==

In the previous section about subgroups we saw that if <math>G</math> is a group with <math>g\in G</math>, then the set of powers of <math>g</math>, <math>\langle g \rangle = \{g^n\mid n\in\mathbb{Z}\}</math> constituted a subgroup of <math>G</math>, called the ''cyclic subgroup generated by <math>g</math>''. In this section, we will generalize this concept, and in the process, obtain an important family of groups which is very rich in structure.

'''Definition 1:''' Let <math>G</math> be a group with an element <math>g\in G</math> such that <math>\langle g \rangle = G</math>. Then <math>G</math> is called a ''cyclic'' group, and <math>g</math> is called a ''generator'' of <math>G</math>. Alternatively, <math>g</math> is said to ''generate'' <math>G</math>. If there exists an integer <math>n</math> such that <math>g^n=e</math>, and <math>n</math> is the smallest positive such integer, <math>G</math> is denoted <math>C_n</math>, the cyclic group of order <math>n</math>. If no such integer exists, <math>G</math> is denoted <math>C_\infty</math>, the infinite cyclic group.

The infinite cyclic group can also be denoted <math>F_{\{g\}}</math>, the ''free group'' with one generator. This is foreshadowing for a future section and can be ignored for now.

To show commutativity, observe that <math>hk=g^ng^m=g^{n+m}=g^{m+n}=g^mg^n=kh</math> and we are done. {{Unicode|∎}}

''Proof'': Let <math>G</math> be a cyclic group with generator <math>g</math>, and let <math>H\leq G</math>. Since <math>G=\langle g \rangle</math>, in particular every element of <math>H</math> equals <math>g^n</math> for some <math>n\in\mathbb{Z}</math>. We claim that if <math>a</math> the lowest positive integer such that <math>g^a\in H</math>, then <math>H=\langle g^a \rangle</math>. To see this, let <math>g^n\in H</math>. Then <math>n=qa+r</math> and <math>0\leq r < a</math> for unique <math>q,r\in \mathbb{Z}</math>. Since <math>H</math> is a subgroup and <math>g^a\in H</math>, we must have <math>g^n (g^a)^{-q}=g^{qa+r}g^{-qa}=g^r\in H</math>. Now, assume that <math>r>0</math>. As the alert reader will have noticed, the preceding proof invoked the notion of ''division with remainder'' which should be familiar from number theory. Our treatment of cyclic groups will have close ties with notions from number theory. This is no coincidence, as the next few statements will show. Indeed, an alternative title for this section could have been "Modular arithmetic and integer ideals". The notion of an ''ideal'' may not yet be familiar to the reader, who is asked to wait patiently until the chapter about rings.

'''Theorem 4:''' Let <math>\mathbb{Z}_n=\{0,1,2,...,n-1\}</math> with addition defined modulo <math>n</math>. That is <math>a+b\equiv r \,\mathrm{mod}\,n</math>, where <math>a+b=qn+r</math>. We denote this operation by <math>a+_nb=r</math>. Then <math>(\mathbb{Z}_n,+_n)</math> is a cyclic group.

The element <math>0\in Z_n</math> is an identity element with respect to <math>+_n</math>. An inverse of <math>a\in Z_n</math> is an element <math>b</math> such that <math>a +_n b=0</math>. Thus <math>b+a|n</math>. Then, <math>b\equiv n-a \equiv -a \,\mathrm{mod}\,n</math>, and so <math>b=n-a=-a</math>, and <math>(\mathbb{Z}_n,+_n)</math> is a group. Now, since <math>a=a\cdot 1 = \underbrace{1+...+1}_{a\,\mathrm{terms}}</math>, <math>1</math> generates <math>\mathbb{Z}_n</math> and so <math>(\mathbb{Z}_n,+_n)</math> is cyclic. {{Unicode|∎}}

Unless we explicitly state otherwise, by <math>\mathbb{Z}_n</math> we will always refer to the cyclic group <math>(\mathbb{Z}_n,+_n)</math>. Since the argument for the generator of <math>\mathbb{Z}_n</math> can be made valid for any integer <math>a</math>, this shows that also <math>\mathbb{Z}</math> is cyclic with the generator <math>1</math>.

'''Theorem 5:''' An element <math>a\in\mathbb{Z}_n</math> is a generator if and only if <math>\gcd(a,n)=1</math>.

''Proof'': We will need the following theorem from number theory: If <math>m,n</math> are integers, then there exists integers <math>r,s</math> such that <math>rm+sn=1</math>, if and only if <math>\gcd(m,n)=1</math>. We will not prove this here. A proof can be found in the number theory section.

For the right implication, assume that <math>\langle a \rangle = \mathbb{Z}_n</math>. Then for all <math>b\in \mathbb{Z}_n</math>, <math>b\equiv pa \,\mathrm{mod}\, n</math> for some integer <math>p</math>. In particular, there exists an integer <math>s</math> such that <math>sa\equiv 1 \,\mathrm{mod}\,n</math>. ''Proof'': The fact that <math>n\mathbb{Z}\cap m\mathbb{Z}</math> is a subgroup is obvious since <math>n\mathbb{Z}</math> and <math>m\mathbb{Z}</math> are subgroups. To find a generator of <math>n\mathbb{Z}\cap m\mathbb{Z}</math>, we must find its lowest positive element. That is, the lowest positive integer <math>p</math> such that <math>p</math> is both a multiple of <math>n</math> and of <math>m</math>. It should be obvious by now that <math>C_n</math> and <math>\mathbb{Z}_n</math>, and <math>C_\infty</math> and <math>\mathbb{Z}</math> are the ''same groups''. This will be made precise in a later section but can be visualized by denoting any generator of <math>C_n</math> or <math>C_\infty</math> by <math>1</math>.
