If the characteristic equation of matrix A is given by:

Δ(λ)=|AλI|=(1)n(λn+an1λn1++a0)=0

Then the Cayley-Hamilton theorem states that the matrix A itself is also a valid solution to that equation:

Δ(A)=(1)n(An+an1An1++a0)=0
